Are you excited when you present your photo shoots to so many people?
It’s funny, I am most excited when I am planning the shoot. You have the idea, you have the outfits or costumes, you define the set and pick the model. This is when it truly is being creative. By the time you reach the studio, all of these things have been defined and discussed with the team; hair, make-up, model, designer… so now you set about lighting and capturing the idea. But this could take place weeks or months after the original creative concept. So shooting, then picking files to edit, then showing the finished images can now be a considerable time later and your creative ideas have already moved on by a project or idea. Or two! There is still a satisfaction when people are complimentary about the work shown, but the greatest excitement – for me – is that original idea, and making it happen.
Your artistic path is interesting… Do you have any particularly significant anecdotes?
There are a couple which I think are amusing. One was a set-up whereby the model would be naked but for heels and long latex gloves, but her nudity would be hidden behind the cello she would be posing with as if playing. All discussions went wonderfully and then I finally asked: any questions? And the model replied: What’s a cello? Another fun story, was during arranging shooting with a model I had not worked with previously, or at this point, even met. So in order to picked suitable outfits, and pitch suitable ideas, I asked her what her limits were. Now for me, I ask this question relative to how much they wish to expose themselves; topless, implied, nude etc. The model was far more daring in her interpretation of the question, and she told thing she would not do was ‘suffocation.’ So no issue with outfits at all!
