Background and inspiration
Boll said he was inspired by the “social injustices” of a 2016 court case in Hamburg, from which a group of teenagers “walked free without any penalty” after they received suspended sentences for gang-raping a 14-year-old girl and leaving her for dead. He said the case made him “so mad” he started writing Citizen Vigilante. The film concludes with a dedication to the “rape victims in Europe who were betrayed by our legal system”.
