Adv/avg are both abbreviations for adventure games, which again means nothing else then your usual visual novel. Other genres would be SLG, RPG… Which while being rarer obviously still add to an absurd long list. As far as i know, the term AVG (AdVenture Game) is used for defining “visual novels” games (lots of texts with images), as the bishoujo (non-adult & adult) japanese games or games like Hideo Kojima”s Snatcher.
